HOW TO CHECK YOUR GOOGLE RANKING

  • Go to www.google.com.au
  • Enter the 'Key Phrase' that you think potential clients might use.
    Don't search for your 'business name' or your 'web address'
    Don't use a single 'Keyword' because single keywords are generic and can be associated with multiple businesses and services.
    e.g. 'consultant' has 126 million entries but 'medical consultants' has 28 million and 'medical consultants australia' has 1.8 million.
    * Google is currently changing it's locality search rules. This means a search such for 'chemists brisbane' may stop getting grouped results but 'chemists IN brisbane' will provide a correct result'
    DO use 'Key Phrases' for your search because this is how your potential clients will search.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - WHY DOESN'T MY WEBSITE APPEAR ON PAGE 1 of GOOGLE?

  • Are people actually searching for the phrases you are using?
    You can check your keyphrase popularity by going to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
  • Has your keyphrase been included in your meta tags, page content and title tag?
    To check, open your home page in your browser. Click on Page/View Source. This shows the page 'code'. Check the Meta Description, Title Tag and page text content for your selected keyphrase. If you can't find it then it's impossible for Google to find.
  • Does your website have an XML 'sitemap' in it's root folder so Google can be directed to check your website updates on a regular basis? The sitemap must be registered with Google before it can become activated.
    You will need to ask your web developer if you aren't sure.

Google Ads can be very effective in getting your website listed on page 1 of Google Search Engine Ranking . Some major Ecommerce sites pay $100,000 plus per month ...so it does work but there are a number of potentially expensive traps for beginners.

To be effective your advertisement MUST create more attention than the others and your website MUST result in a lead or the cost of your PPC* is wasted.
* PPC is the amount you are willing to pay Google Adwords if someone clicks through to your website from your Advertisement. This can be anything from a couple of cents to hundreds of dollars depending on the bid of your competitors. There are only 8 spots ordered by bid on page 1 of Adwords so you must outbid all the others on page 2, 3 etc.

HOW IT WORKS

Google Adwords Management is different to SEO (Search engine Optimisation) because it doesn't rely on any code in your website. It just links your URL to keywords and key phrases you have chosen.

When you register for an Adwords account you nominate a monthly budget and a daily maximum spend for individual key phrases . If you nominate $30 per month budget with a daily maximum of $1 and 10 cents per click through your daily budget will be exhausted after 10 click throughs.

When your daily budget is exhausted your advertisement will be removed and will reappear for the next daily cycle. This means your advertisement won't be online all the time. You can overcome this by increasing your daily maximum spend but you will also have to increase your monthly budget.

When you open your Adwords account Google automatically calculates a default PPC depending on your monthly budget and daily maximum.
Naturally, this amount errs on the high side often around $2 to $3 per click through which means your advert will exceed it's budget using the example above... very quickly. In other words you will be wasting all your money.

However, you can often adjust this daily spend to 20 or 30 cents for individual key phrases. Your Adwords account will show you if you are bidding below a page 1 position.

The learning curve is very high and requires constant management of your budgets and advertisement content to become effective.

This is a serious investment and we have client's who have cancelled their phone directory display adverts and invested the money in Adwords management.

There are a couple of views on the placement of contact information.

  • Home page. This allows a shortcut so visitors can contact you without checking out your full website. It's preferable to encourage visitors to 'explore' your site unless you rely on instant contact.
  • Contact information on the site 'header' or 'footer'. This method doesn't interfere with the flow of the site content but is easy to access from any page.
  • A Contact page devoted to providing your company information and gathering customer information and requirements in an ordered way.
    A dedicated page is useful for market research from your visitor statistics because it can reflect the number of visitors who actually consider contacting you by visiting the contact page. If a large number of visitors go to your contact page but don't contact you it probably means you haven't offered them a good enough reason.

Twitter is all the rage and can help promote your business if you play by the rules.

TAKE 3 SLOW STEPS

  • Open an Account - www.twitter.com
    Try and keep your account name similar to your product/service name
  • Go to the Twitter Directory - www.twellow.com
    Find a category that is compatible with your business
  • Read the twitter entries and find one that you can answer or add to in a helpful way. Don't attempt a hard sell!
    Instead, genuinely try to help. If you keep doing this you will become accepted as a source for information on the subject. After this happens, you can drop a few lines about more information on your website with your URL so they can visit. Alternatively, you can point people to your own Twitter page which will be full of FREE information and links.

Twitter can also help with your search rankings because of it's enormous amount of changing content. Google just laps up this type of content.
